There are various ways in which an electromagnetic field can be seen. Case in point, static magnetic fields become active when medical instruments like magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and X-rays are being used. In ultra-violet ray form, electromagnetic radiation showers down from the sun to the earth. An electromagnetic charge is held by radioactive elements, deep under the earth's surface. In addition, microwaves, refrigerators, mobile phones, and other devices that are electronic send out their own waves that are electromagnetic. The most captivating thing, though, is the application of electromagnetic fields to cure and restore the body.

The FDA has approved using electromagnetic fields for treating depression. Thirty-seven million people in America, or about one fourth of women and one tenth of men, suffer from depression. During trans-magnetic stimulation, a potent electromagnet energizes the brain's left frontal lobe, vitalizing brain cells, and forcing neurotransmitter brain chemicals to send all kind of signals. While a lot of research is still going on, the advantages of the electromagnetic pulse is that it's fast, has no side effects, and works many times on patients who have had no success with other treatments.

In a number of studies, those suffering from multiple sclerosis have also exhibited good results from electromagnetic field therapy. Patients were able to walk and balance better after two 20-30 minute treatments of picoTesla range, low-frequency electromagnetic fields, with a 15 minute break in between each treatment. People with MS were still able to get around even when there was external stimulus. In other studies, 10 days of electromagnetic field therapy reduced excessive fatigue and, in some cases, electromagnetic stimulation resulted in diminished spasticity.

An interesting thing about using electromagnetic field therapy is the ability to trace and track the magnets after they go in the body. Researchers are looking into nanotechnology and magnets to help find a cure for cancer. For example, nano-magnets affixed to antibodies have the ability to fasten to cancerous cells and allow high-strength radio waves to burn and "zap" the cancerous cells, causing no damage at all to the surrounding tissue and cells. Though it has not reached the human testing stage, this new and stimulating field has great potential for the advancement of electromagnetics and cancer research.

Many people are fearful of the long-term effects of exposure to electromagnetic fields, especially radiation from cell phones, computers, refrigerators, televisions, ipods, and other electronic gizmos. No link has been noted between the wave radiation that is electromagnetic, and cancer or damage of other types, by the World Health Organization. Currently, scientists are working on how magnets work in a person's body so that mental and physical ailments can be cured.
